Morocco Tunes in to Marine Protected Areas

Morocco is about to create three test MPAs in an effort to contribute to the sustainability of small-scale fisheries.

Under the leadership of the Agence du partenariat pour le progress (APP), a Moroccan public agency created in 2008, three test sites were selected, based on an review by the National institute of Fisheries Research (INHR).

IUCN Publishes Criteria for Red List of Threatened Ecosystems

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), co-organizer of IMPAC3, published on May 8 a new global standard for the creation, by 2025, of a Red List of Ecosystems under threat.

The IUCN already maintains a Red List of Threatened Species. The new list will supplement it through an ecosystemic approach.

NOAA Scientists Warn of Nearly Ice-Free Arctic Summers Before 2050

For scientists studying summer sea ice in the Arctic, it’s not a question of “if” there will be nearly ice-free summers, but “when.” And two scientists say that “when” is sooner than many thought — before 2050 and possibly within the next decade or two.

Global leaders launched on Feb. 12, 2013, in London a new initiative to restore health and productivity to the ocean: the Global Ocean Commission.
