With its one million square miles, the Mediterranean represents 0,8 % of the oceans. Yet it shelters 9 % of their fauna and 18 % of their flora, making it a hot spot of marine biodiversity. But "Mare Nostrum" – “Our Sea”, as the Romans called it – is under pressure. It concentrates one third of world tourism world and one fifth of all seaborne oil and gas shipping. Most Mediterranean countries have committed themselves to creating marine protected areas, seeing them as crucial instruments in the conservation of their heritage. Marine protected areas ensure that future generations will enjoy the Mediterranean just like we do – or even more so.
