The IUCN World Parks Congress comes to an end

The IUCN World Parks Congress 2014, the once-in-a-decade global forum on protected areas, closes today with the release of The Promise of Sydney. The Promise sets out an ambitious agenda to safeguard the planet’s natural assets. One of the main marine outcomes is to increase the ocean area that is effectively and equitably managed in ecologically representative and well connected systems of MPAs or other effective conservation measures by 2030. These should include strictly protected areas that amount to at least 30% of each marine habitat and address both biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The Promise includes pledges from governments, international organizations, the private sector, Indigenous leaders, community groups and individuals, with many more still being recorded.

Key commitments on marine were made, according to the IUCN Press Release. Click here to learn more.
